Wireless Surround Sound

For the most basic wireless surround sound system, you will need at least six speakers. The reason for this is because they need to be placed in the right locations within your living or entertainment room. The six locations that these six speakers will be placed in are the Front Center, the Right Front, the Left Front, the Left Rear, the Right Rear, and the Powered subwoofer.

The six speakers will need to be properly voiced matched so that they will have an identical tonal balance, which is also known as timbre. To do this, I advise you to purchase your wireless surround sound speakers from the same manufacturer, and you should avoid mixing different brands at all costs. Another thing that you may want to look at is 7.1 and 6.1 channel sound. If you wish to install either of these, you will need two back surround speakers.

Currently, there isn't a large amount of sources available on the back surround type speakers, but you will definitely want to add these in the future. The A/V Receiver will need to make use of the 7.1 or 6.1 channel sound in order to make use of these speakers. If you want to generate a true wireless surround sound, you will also need to become familiar with speaker placement. The speaker in the Front Center is crucial, because this is where much of the sound and voices will be heard.

As you can see, the Front Center speakers should never be supplementary. You will want this speaker to be very high in quality, and it should have both a good frequency range as well as a bass response. It must be centered and placed either right above or below the television screen. This speaker should also be shielded, since the magnets within the speaker may cause trouble for CRT based televisions when it is in close range to them.

The left and right speakers on the front must be positioned to either the right or left of the screen, and there must be enough separation to obtain the proper stereo effects. For most living or entertainment rooms, they will need to be set apart for about 6 to 12 feet. You don't want to put these to the sides of a smaller television, as they should be mounted to about the level of the ears, but it is also fine to simply put them on the floor.
